Borough Market

I could have sworn that we had written about or trip to Borough Market before, but after getting an email from my dad asking questions about it was pretty clear we hadn't.

Anyway, this one is going way back now, I think we visited sometime before Christmas last year.

The REAL borough market is a wholesale market operates on all weekday mornings from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m., but the retail market operates only on Thursday thru Saturdays.

The present market, located just south of Southwark Cathedral on the southern end of London Bridge, is a successor to one that originally adjoined the end of London Bridge It was first mentioned in 1276, although the market itself claims to have existed since 1014. The present buildings were designed in 1851, with additions in the 1860s and an entrance added on Southwark Street in 1932.

I think we had built it up in our heads as the worlds biggest or best, and expected to see the whole world of food when we arrived. Now don't get me wrong there was a lot of stuff, but it didn't meet our lofty expectations. I think part of the problem was that we went during the winter and there just isn't much growing then, and the other part was we went early in the morning and things hadn't really gotten going yet.

I have mentioned it before, but its worth repeating. London just doesn't have an affinity for mornings. If you go anywhere before 10 you will probably find yourself by yourself. We ran into similar problems at Spitifields market, where we hoped to get something for breakfast, and ended up just watching people set up their stalls.

We have had friends visit the market since we went and they just raved about it so, it must be something to do with our timing. Maybe we will try again, but its winter again so maybe we will wait a couple more months.

Anyway like I said they had a lot of stuff, but just didn't seem to be what we were going for. No dead animal hanging from a string for Kristen.

I bought a huge brownie, and stared at all of the cakes and cookies. Kristen got something cheesy and I was jealous.

They were making cheese sandwiches at one stall. They would litterally pile cheese between two slices of bread, and then throw it in the panini press.

And then they put these cheese wheels under a blast furnace type thing and once its super melty, they scape it all over stuff.

Can't imagine how clogged up you would be!!
